EAGERLY PREACHING TO THE EAGERLY APPROVING (Romans 1:32)

Click here for audio Pastor Tim’s Translation - “…who, while knowing full well the righteous ruling of God (that those who practice such things are worthy of death), not only are doing these things but are also enthusiastically approving those who practice them.” The book of Romans is known as Paul’s systematic treatment of the gospel over sixteen chapters. Chapters 1-11 lay out an intensive exploration of the teachings of salvation. Chapters 12-16 expound the practical living that results from a correct, Spirit-applied understanding of the teaching in chapters 1-11. All of this is packaged neatly as a missionary letter. I say it is a missionary letter, because (first), Paul says in 1:8-15 that he is longing to get to Rome in order to preach the gospel to them and help them in their understanding of the teachings of salvation. He can’t get to them yet, so he sends this letter to them to prepare them for his coming. I say it is a missionary letter, because (second), he wants the church ...

Theology - Prologue to Lesson 24 - The Extent of the Atonement

The nature of the atonement: propitiation, redemption, and reconciliation ACCOMPLISHED on the cross at Calvary. The Scripture presents Christ’s work as complete. Having examined the nature of the atonement, we should next ask about the scope of the atonement: For whom did Christ die as a substitute? The majority of texts speak in a limited way (cf. for example Mark 10:45; John 10:15; Rom 5:15, 19; etc.), though there are a handful of texts that could be understood universally (cf. 1 Tim 2:2-4; 2 Pet 2:1; 1 John 2:2).

The Revelation of God's Wrath (Romans 1:24-31)

Click here to listen Today we come to a section of Scripture that is, at the same time, both one of the most useful and most hard-hitting passages in all of Scripture. You know our stance on Scripture. Every word is inspired. Every word is inerrant. Every word is sufficient for life and godliness. Every word carries the authority of God, and we must approach every word of Scripture with this same conviction. Paul says in 2 Timothy 3:16-17 that all Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. All Scripture is profitable for our spiritual growth. It’s not always readily apparent how all Scripture is profitable. It takes some study/work before the genealogies really become profitable. It takes some time/work to dig out gold in some of the census passages in Numbers. But then there are passages like this one, where even a cursory reading provides ...

Theology Lesson #23 - Christ's Saving Work of Atonement

= In this lesson, we begin to study the topic of soteriology, that is, salvation. As you are surely aware, the topic of salvation is massive. In these brief lessons, we will only scratch the surface of this topic. My goal is to give us a working knowledge of the various parts of salvation.
