The Bible is the Word of God

At The Baptist Church of Concordia, “ we believe the Bible to be the inspired Word of God, without error in the original writings, the complete revelation of His will for the salvation of mankind and the Divine and final authority for all Christian faith and life.” That is what it says in our DOCTRINAL STATEMENT. That is what we preach from the pulpit. This is what our Sunday School teachers teach our children.

Theology Lesson #20 - The Nature and Work of Satan and the Demons

In Genesis 3, a mysterious and menacing character suddenly appears on the scene. It is unclear at first glance exactly who this tempter is, because he doesn’t (visibly) appear in Genesis or the rest of the Torah. The only clear Old Testament references to him outside of Genesis 3 are in 1 Chronicles 21 (where he is shown to be a secondary cause of God), Job 1 and 2 (where he is clearly subject to God’s sovereignty), and Zechariah 3 (where he is an adversary to be rebuked). Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28 should probably be added to the list, though they are disputed (see discussion below). There is another possibility if the King James translation is correct in Psalm 109:6 (Appoint a wicked man over him, And let an accuser (or Satan) stand at his right hand).

Genesis 31 - Jacob's Flight

This article is part of a series of articles that resulted from my time preaching through the book of Genesis. The commentary on the passage is my own, resulting from hours of research and exegetical study. It is my intent to draw a biblical theology chapter by chapter through the book of Genesis that places the events of the narratives into the broad picture of the entire Bible, demonstrating the progressiveness of theology and the sufficiency of every Word of Scripture. It is my prayer that these articles are helpful to those seeking a better understanding of the book of Genesis and of the Bible as a whole. The sermon series and other resources can be found at www.fbcroxana.com . The LORD, the creator of heaven and earth, chose the family of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob out of all the families and nations of the earth. He blessed them with His covenant, promising them the land of Canaan as an eternal inheritance, multitudes of descendants to live in it, and kings to rule ove...

The sermon series and other resources can be found at www.fbcroxana.com . Abraham’s son, Isaac, had two sons. God chose only one of them to inherit the Abrahamic covenant. The covenant promises would be passed on through the generations until all was fulfilled. Jacob had already bought Esau’s birthright from him in exchange for a bowl of porridge. This birthright made hi...

Genesis 26 - Isaac in Gerar

It is said that history repeats itself. By recounting this part of Isaac’s life which parallels his father’s, Moses shows us that Isaac had much the same fears as Abraham. Neither Abraham nor Isaac were perfect in their walk with the LORD. There were times that they leaned on their own understanding instead of trusting Him to protect them. Yet God was always faithful to His promises. It was evident to all that despite Isaac’s faltering, God was with Him. Our response demonstrates whether we are truly trusting God or not. Would the family of Abraham continue to trust God and obey Him or would they seek to find their own place in the land of Canaan? 1 Now there was a famine in the land, besides the previous famine that had occurred in the days of Abraham. Like his father before him, Isaac attempted to escape the famine by going to Egypt. However, he only made it to Gerar before the LORD stopped him. So Isaac went to Gerar, to Abimelech king of the Philistines. 2 The ...

Though Abraham had many sons through his concubines, only the son of the promise—who born through his wife, Sarah—would receive the blessing and covenant of the LORD. Through him would come a son who would become the nation of Israel. That nation ...

He desires to restore all things to the perfection of creation as at the first. To do that, God singled out one family through whom He would send the Redeemer, the seed of the woman promised in...
